Methods for Avoiding the Madness…

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 by annemarie

Following up from my last post, I want to detail how one can guard against the pull of apathy/ lethargy/ and other leanings of a brain experiencing symptoms that are by nature disempowering or just a view of life that is currently disempowering. Awareness is the key.
Here’s what you can do to maintain a more positive bent:

1) The first step is to distinguish the symptom or pull of thoughts from yourself. It’s not YOU it’s a symptom or an experience.

2) Know that you CAN interrupt this experience: you are not your thoughts nor are you limited by the tendency of your physical brain.

3) SEt up structures that live outside of you that keep the trend toward being disempowered interrupted…get a coach, create a mantra or statement that empowers you ( My favorite is “everything is happening in my favor…”), set your caregivers/ family and friends up to check in with you about your mood and mindset, have a plan that excites you.

4) Create appointments with yourself and others to look on the bright side, focus on what is working, and planning inspiring events, vacations, day trips in the future to support your mind set. Set yourself up to be inspired.

5) Fill your home with light and life: flowers, plants and Full spectrum light bulbs

6) Get fresh air! WALK if you can, MOVE, STRETCH, go be outside, get a tan and take vitamin D

7) FEED YOUR HEAD! Read more about the brain here’s some examples: Dr David Amen~ Magnificent Mind or Making a Good Brain Great; David Rock~ Your Brain at work. According to David Rock people who were more educated about the brain were more effective in managing their emotional responses to threat.

8) Try Bach flower remedies available at Wholefoods or online, these have been very helpful for myself and my clients who want regulate their mood with out a perscription.

9) Set your supplements out on the counter where you are more likely to take them, or set them up for the next day before bed…make it easy to keep your promises to yourself.

10) Take control of the flow of information you allow in your mental space. Check emails at certain specific times. Be uninterruptable. Limit TV and NEWS.
Time yourself on Facebook…don’t allow yourself to get lost…use a kitchen timer.

11) Rally the troops! Have scheduled conversations with the nurturing supportive people in your life. Keep those appointments. Nurture the ones that make you feel supported and cared for, while powerfully managing neccessary relationships that don’t always support you~ minimize your time with these people.

12) Go volunteer for an afternoon~ step out of your own life and into caring for others~ your concerns will still be there when you are done. Do this at least once a month.

13) Manage your rest. SLEEP. NAP. Trying to bounce back from a setback or circumstance without being rested is silly.

14) Keep inspiring texts at hand: I am currently reading The Purpose Driven Life, By Wallace Wattles; The Bounce Back Book, by Karen Salmansohn is delightful and I just picked up the JOY Diet by Martha Beck

15) Journal. For over 15 years I have done what’s called the Morning Pages from The Artist’s Way, by Julia Cameron. Each morning I sit for 15 minutes and write whatever comes to mind with out judgment or assessment. Put words on a page…from time to time this practice yields something useful…like this list!

Awareness may be the key, but practices are the lock. The lock on sustaining a clear focused positive mental space. Any time I catch myself slipping I can guarantee you that I have let my practices go out of existence or have slacked in my discipline. It takes something to keep your head out of the miasma of fear and uncertainty that seems to coat the world today, especially when one is dealing with a chronic illness. But just because it takes something doesnt mean its not worth the effort!

Go forth and use your powers for good!

Blue Monday? Here’s how to fight back!

Monday, January 25th, 2010 by annemarie

So I just read a study saying TODAY was the most depressing day of the year! First off it sounds like a lot of pressure to put on 1 day…and my first reaction was to call BULLPUCKY! THE LAST THING I NEED IS SOME BLOGGER TELLING ME TODAY’S THE MOST DEPRESSING DAY OF THE DAMN YEAR! However, some of the underlying logic made sense in a mad way. According to Peterborough Today, www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk, the last Monday in January is “blue” because this is when we get the bill from our holiday excesses, the weather sucks, and we’ve almost all broken our New years resolutions by now. SO we feel like poop for breaking our promises! Given that my Master plan program is all about managing your mental, emotional and physical space for optimal performace and wellness, I have a few answers or practices that may make a difference for you who are BLUE:

1) Get more sleep
2) Install full spectrum lights in your home
3) When you feel blue dress up! In colors even!
4) Take your vitamins~ I walk around with liquid Vitamin B-complex, Emergenc packets and a Maca Supplement called AdrenaLift
5) Eat closer to the sun- buy grapes and fresh fruit or veggies to eat lighter
6) Check out Bach Flower Remedies available on line or at Whole Foods; these potent formula’s have helped me with my ALS symptom of emotional lability, which causes extreme emotional rxns to normal things ie: crying over a dropped fork! If they work for me they’ll probably work for you.
7) Get in communication about your debt- do a budget to get back on track & while you’re at it plan next years holiday shopping over 3-4 months to spread out the cost~ I start buying presents in September 2-3 per month, so I’m always done early and I’ve paid for most of it by Thanksgiving.
8) Get back on your horse about you Goals for the new year & STOP CALLING THEM RESOLUTIONS! RESOLUTIONS ALWAYS REFER YOU TO A PAST FAILURE VERSUS A GOAL WHICH CREATES THE FUTURE.
9) Do 1 nice thing for yourself each day~ this is harder than it sounds…
10) Plan a trip~ somewhere warm if you can as a reward for meeting a goal or fulfilling on a project
11) Be grateful for what health you have and take steps to optimize it even in the face of a terminal diagnosis~ what do you have to loose?

12) If you really are fighting depression or anxiety: read Dr. David Amen’s “Making a Good Brain Great” and “Magnificent Mind” as well as Dr. Mark Hyman’s book, “”The UltraMind Solution”.

Whew! Have a nice day!

Magical Maca…I’m not even kidding.

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 by annemarie

I take several supplements daily, mostly basic stuff like emergenc packets~ because I can’t swallow the pills for a multi, fiber, acidoplilus. I make shakes 3-4 tmes a week with fresh or frozen fruit, water and Karyn’s greens or Garden of Life’s Perfect food super green formula ( because I can’t chew salad), Flax seed oil, Hemp protien powder or EAS 100% whey protien powder and some creatine to help me sustain my muscle mass. I occassionally take E3Live when I remember but there is one supplement that makes a huge immediate difference for me and I find it difficult to live with out: Maca Magic AdrenaLift, from Herbs America based in Murphy, Oregon. www.AdrenaLift.com

I discovered this supplement at Karyn’s Raw Vegan Shop on Halsted in Chicago, while I was picking up some dietary enzymes ( her’s are the best!). How I know the Adrenalift make THE difference is that twice now over the past year I have run out and not been able to replace it right away…each time the same thing occurred: I was infinitely tired and had the experience of not being able to get rested NO MATTER HOW MUCH SLEEP I GOT. Then when got some more with in 2 days of taking 20-30 drops a day mixed in with my Emergenc I woke feeling well, rested and not like I had to fight the weight of the world to haul my ass out of bed.

I don’t know about you but I have enough to deal with without feeling like I don’t want to get out of bed or leave my house. I don’t want the sugar of energy drinks or carbonation or all that other madness. I just want something simple that works. It comes in 2 oz bottles w a dropper so I can take it with me, I also carry a liquid Vitamin B complex I get at GNC and various Bach Flower Remedies when I need the emotional support. It’s a miracle and I’m not kidding.

Alternative therapies that make a difference:

Saturday, December 26th, 2009 by annemarie

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor though I have seen one played on TV; which merely qualifies me to hawk an over the counter painkiller… (and Pharma Co’s if you are listening~can we get a liquid aspirin/ ibuprofen etc? with out having to take cold meds? Thanks for getting right on that.)

I am relating what I have heard from other patients and experienced myself.

Damon Storm wrote me recently regarding the effectiveness of Qi Gong in managing his sarcoidosis…which has some symptoms very similar to ALS including occasionally slurred speech and difficulty breathing. He is completely without medication and thriving. I also was told about the wonders of Qi Gong through the remarkable film by Ben Byer, “Indestructible”. I highly recommend this exceptional film for all people, not just those of us touched by ALS. You can get more information at www.indestructiblefilm.com

Certainly, I am buying the book Damon requested I pick up “Qi Gong for Beginners” by Stanley Wilson.

In an earlier post I referred to the success I have personally experienced with adding lots of raw foods to my diet. Not only has the increase in fiber assisted in the smooth move department, but the increase in my energy level has been unprecedented and immediate. Even though I can no longer chew most salads I have been delighted by the variety on foods and recipes in the world of raw food. I usually stick with fresh fruit shakes in the mornings supplemented with hemp protein powder, ground flax seeds, liquid vitamins and greens( as in Perfect Food Greens) and spirulina. I also make several types of juices from fresh veggies. The Chicago Diner, Karyn’s Raw Cafe and Karyn’s Cooked ( www.karynraw.com) are 3 of my favorite local Chicago resources/ restaurants for vegan and raw food delights.
I will add a list of cook books or uncook books as the case maybe, in the future.

When it turns colder in Chicago, I have difficulty sticking to the raw food and I am drawn to more warm veggie dishes. Keep in mind I am not a vegetarian, in fact I have been an avowed carnivore much of my life, and I am a committed foodie as well as a certificate level Semollier since 1998. This is one of the reasons being reduced to a feeding tube is borderline unacceptable for me. However, regardless of my love of a great steak, venison roast or Lamb chop the difference in my overall energy level is undeniable when I focus on uncooked fruits and vegetables. Eating closer to the sun, I call it. 2-3 times a year I also participate in a raw food cleanse, for a month I will only have raw foods and I will do a 7-10 day veggie juice fast.

Interestingly enough my doctor had no dietary advice other than eat well, until I mentioned my intention to do a cleanse and to thereafter stick to a 70-80% raw food diet. Then we had nutritionists and concerns form my weight loss coming out of the woodwork. And I needed to drop a few lbs. I could actually lose 20 more and not be unhappy. I am conscious of keeping up my protein with nuts, protein powder, beans and the occasional eggs, fish and meat.

I have to attribute the fact that I am still walking and moving around so well due to a weekly massage. Every week for the past 3 years I have had a massage for 75 minutes at least. My muscle tone and overall strength is still pretty good, though I can no longer walk long distances along my beloved lake front, and the last 6 months has seen a marked weakening of my neck muscles.

I also highly recommend chiropractic care, upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Dan Fedelli, actually restored my smile after the right side of my face fell… it was lopsided for almost a year. I definitely notice the difference in my overall well being when I see him regularly and when I don’t, and he’s great about telling you when enough is enough.

I almost forgot my FAVORITE discovery: Bach Flower Remedies. For the first 4.5 years of my symptoms I had no diagnosis and was constantly dealing with the upset and uncertainty of the unknown. Little did I know I would yearn for the “unknown” in the months directly after my diagnosis! The result was emotionally I was ok as long as I wasn’t focused upon myself and my situation. The moment I had to speak of it with others I would tear up, especially at Doctor’s appointments out of shear frustration. Every single physician and specialist I saw recommended anti-depressants. It made me sick! I wasn’t depressed I was UPSET! Big difference. Anyway; the best thing that came out of my diagnosis was finding out emotional lability is a SYMPTOM. I wasn’t crazy and hyper emotional it was a freakin SYMPTOM! In retrospect it was perhaps the 1st symptom I recalled. Instead of dealing with anti-depressants, which in the 3 weeks I broke down and tried them had only made me more depressed and lethargic…I turned to Bach Flower remedies at my local Whole Foods Store. They are amazing and effective. I only take them when I want to or feel the need for support. There are no side effects. Only a mood stabilizing effect that allows me to get on with the business at hand.

So far we have Qi Gong, Raw food diet, Massage, Chiropractic care, Bach Flower Remedies and a must see movie. I have had some fantastic energy healing experiences, and dabbled in acupuncture though not enough to attribute any specific results.

I’d love to hear from you as to what you have experienced and had success with in reality.
